Winston The Argentine Tegu

Winston The Argentine Tegu
Winston is always collecting things for his hoard. He enjoys things similar to how a dog does and carries everything around. While outside, he will carry something until he finds another thing to carry and so on. In the house, he puts everything in his castle and then sleeps with it. Yes, he has a literal castle...

We have been doing chasing exercises as enrichment. Might as well make it fun for you too with some heavy editing and adding sound.
NO MICE ARE TORTURED IN THIS VIDEO! THEY WERE ALREADY DEAD...

Winston enjoys chasing his ball around. He probably thinks it's a big egg.

He was scratching at the door to be let out. But everytime I let him out, it's only to collect all the shoes to put in his castle.

People who don't know us: Put him back where he came from! He needs to be out in the wild!
Winston: I almost got it! Ope next one. Nope, I'll get this. Ugh, I have it this time!
Me: yeah... you were saying?
Since it's too cold to go outside, we buy worms for enrichment! He was not successful. How do these guys survive in the wild?

Sit with human... DUH! ere is a great example of Winston choosing companionship over basking in warm lights.
Should I bask or sit with my human?

It is very important to understand body language. That is how we communicate with animals. After awhile, we become fluent in their language and understand what they are saying. Family dog barks viciously; you know there is danger. Cat twirls around your legs tripping you down the stairs and die. Cat revives you and looks into your soul.. yep, it's time to feed Fluffy. "Thanks for reviving me, Fluffy..."
Every animal is unique. Not all cats are the same. Not all dogs are the same. That goes for reptiles as well but there is one thing that they all go through... hormones!
As you can see, he is not trying to be malicious. This isn't bad behavior. It is natural and it is ok. Not all bites are intended to cause harm. Some are literally love bites. I like to call it grabbing instead though. They can't help that they can't use their hands to carry or hold on to things.
Winston likes to be grabby. He uses his mouth to grab on to do his deed (mount). Its not fun and he has never succeeded but I know he means well haha! He eventually gives up and sulks. I do feel bad for him but there isn't anything I can do or give that he likes. I tried giving him a lizard doll. He never touched it. I also do not want to risk his life by doing an uneeded, invasive surgery to get him neutered. Plus, I love him EXACTLY the way he is. 100% Perfect to me.
They have such a complex way of communicating. I do not think people realize how complex their communication is or can be. After living with him for 6+ years, I can tell what he's thinking. If he wants attention, sometimes he grabs. He is talking and doesn't have thumbs. My cat does that too.
What I'm trying to say is, not all bites are intended to harm you. Sometimes they just have a painful way of showing their love. Know the difference and know how to respond to the situation. Always stay calm. They will too. And they will love you for understanding their frustrations. Just take it as a compliment.
